Hmm, this sounds like a really interesting course, and one that I would very much like to take, if my timetable allows for it. I’m puzzled by a few things, though:
* I thought that SDS usually ran in Term 2? That’s what LEAP says, at least… http://leap.ubc.ca/get_ahead/student_directed_seminars/faqs/#For%20Students
* What days/times does the course run? I don’t see it on the SSC, nor on the LEAP listing of SDS..
Hi Sonja,
To answer your questions:
1) Yes, normally Student Directed Seminars do run in term 2. However, this year due to a high volume of applications to coordinate seminars, the committee has allowed three courses to run in the fall semester (September- December).
There are a lot of events happening at UBC in the first semester that the course coordinators feel will contribute significantly to our discussions (if we attend these events as part of our course). An example is the MSF Refugee Camp in the City Exhibit.
2) The 2008/09 SDS courses are not up on the LEAP website yet. The list you see if for last year (07/08). The course is not on the SSC because registration is not open (as in all courses). It is through an application process.
Rest assured that it is definitely an approved course, and you will get three credits for it.
I apologize for not having the days/times up here, but I will put that up as a separate post now. Please feel free to leave a comment, or email inthealthaid@gmail.com if you have any more concerns/questions. Thanks for your interest!
This sounds like a WONDERFUL seminar. I heard about this through an old MSF newsletter. I’m extremely interested in taking this seminar – but I have already graduated. Do I have to register with UBC in order to come to class? Would it be possible for me to sit in and just “absorb” and learn from my fellow students?
Hi Vivian,
Thank you for your interest in the course. I believe in order for you to be able to register as a student in the course, you need to be a UBC student. So you would need to register with UBC. I am not sure if you will be able to audit the class w/o being a UBC student either. However, we plan to open a few of our class sessions to the campus community.
We look forward to having you in the class and meeting you. Please feel free to contact us if there are any other questions.
